I did it! I finally launched a Patreon! This is something I’ve been wanting to do for, oh…about fifteen months or so but, tbh, I kept chickening out.
Who would want to pay monthly to see my art?
Am I creating more work for myself?
Do I even have the fanbase to support one?
Those are just a few questions I kept asking myself over and over before deciding to just cast aside my fears and give it a shot. So here we are!
FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, Patreon is a “subscription-style payment model, [in which] fans pay their favorite creators a monthly amount of their choice in exchange for exclusive access, extra content, or a closer look into their creative journey.” (I took that off their website–I am not above copy & paste to save time/thought energy).
For me however, with social media increasingly becoming louder and more complex, I primarily wanted a fun, positive and engaging environment for all my fans and readers to hang out in. Subscribers (aka Space Cats) get first access to any new art and comics I create, a deeper look into my process, exclusive print and merchandise opportunities, be a decisive part of what I create and more! Think of it less like a Patreon and more like a fan club. A fan club that will allow me to create more of what you would really like to see from me.
What I’m most excited about though is you’ll get to watch me create my next graphic novel from the ground up! I’ll share scripts, concept art, works-in-progress and finished pages before they are ever released into the wild. Not to mention comic-making tips and tutorials. With almost fifteen years of professionally making comics under my belt, I’d love to pass on some of that knowledge to all of you.
It’s also the one place you’ll be able to get an original (albeit small) watercolor sketch from me. Only five per month right now though because well…I’m a busy guy.
ONE LAST THING: My Patreon will be an all-ages experience, meaning I think that both adults and kids will benefit from it. So parents and teachers, don’t be afraid to share a subscription with your kids. I think they could gain a lot! Especially once the graphic novel posts get going.
So come on in, grab a cup of tea, take up a cape and a pencil, and make yourself at home. 🙂
