Project: Rooftop posted their Aquaman: Sea Change winners yesterday and mine was one of the runners up!
I do not consider myself a decent costume designer. There are far more people doing a far better job of costume designing than I (just take a look at those entries!) and I am fully content on leaving this intelligent and creative art skill to them. But as a pretty big fan of Aquaman I had to give it a shot. And considering I had to nail something out fairly quickly because of my ridiculously insane schedule right now, I’m pretty happy with how he turned out. Since Arthur Curry is not solely a superhero but also King of Atlantis, I wanted to find a good balance between those two vocations. To keep things iconic and recognizable (and because I really don’t think there’s anything wrong with it) I kept basically the same color scheme/placement/etc of his original costume. Just melded it a bit with something that could be some sort of Atlantean armor or something to give him that kingly “maybe I have to go into battle every so often” touch. I also couldn’t decide if I wanted Arthur one-handed or not which is why I gave him that lonely green glove on his left arm. I figure why not let it be mysterious. Plus I thought it looked cool. And then I put him on some coral. Because he probably feels very comfortable standing on coral.
It’s just my opinion, but I think this was one of the best turnouts for a P:R contest yet. I’m thrilled to be among so many thoughtful and well executed designs. Congrats to Daniel Mikah Govar, Jordan Gibson, and Nate Bellegarde for their much deserved top honors!
